Safety rules are of the utmost importance when working in a laboratory and especially in a chemistry laboratory. In chemistry labs, safety rules must always be followed because the chemicals used in chemistry labs pose a danger to working professionals. With the help of proper laboratory safety equipment, we can prevent accidents and casualties.

These are some of the basic safety rules that should be followed while working in a chemistry lab.

  • Most accidents in the chemistry lab occur due to improper clothing. People spill acid on themselves, notes, or other people and set themselves on fire. Long, loose clothing is strictly prohibited in the laboratories. Long hairs are supposed to be tied back. Wearing a lab coat and safety glasses is recommended when working in chemistry laboratories.
  • Every chemical you use in the lab must be accompanied with a Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS). We must follow the recommendations for the safe use and disposal of the material.
  • Never use the pipette with the help of the mouth. You may not be aware of the consequences these chemicals can have on your health. All laboratory apparatus must be handled properly.
  • It is very important to know how to use the laboratory safety equipment that is kept in your laboratory. You must know the location of this equipment such as fire extinguishers, showers, fire blankets, eyewash, etc. Demonstrations should be given to all students so that at the time of the requirement they can act quickly.
  • While working with chemicals, do not deviate from the instructions. Care should be taken when mixing chemicals. Do not mix them randomly, otherwise it may have serious consequences.
  • There are different disposal methods for different chemicals. All chemicals must not be disposed of down the drain. You must wash the chemicals in the sink.
  • Never eat or drink anything in the lab.
  • Do not smell or taste chemicals. Even breathing in some dangerous chemicals can harm you. If a certain chemical is supposed to be used inside a range hood, then use it elsewhere.
