La Rochelle was founded during the 10th century under the name of Rupella. It has a long history and wonderful historical places that attract a number of tourists every year. It is a very attractive city in the west of France. It is a seaport on the Bay of Biscay, apart from the Atlantic Ocean. The city has beautifully maintained its past architecture and monuments, making it one of the most historically rich cities on the Atlantic coast. The city fortifications built by Vauban with seven gates and three towers facing the sea, are:

  • Saint Nicholas is the oldest tower built in 1384.
  • The Torre de las Cadenas, built at the end of the 14th century.
  • The lantern tower (1445-1476) was once used as a lighthouse.

  • Festivals and events in Le Rochelle include Sailing in May and the French Song Festival in July.
  • South of La Rochelle it joins the two islands of Aix and OlĂ©ron.
