The auction house is the central core of the World of Warcraft economy, as lucrative as the auction house is, it’s also a bit confusing at first. This WoW Auction House Guide will demonstrate how to get started on the auction house, as well as the best buy price and best sell price for items.
Where to find auction houses?
Auction houses can be located in cities and some of the towns found throughout Azeroth. If you are playing for the Alliance, auction houses can be located in the following cities; Stormwind, Darnassus, Ironforge, and Exodar. If you play for the Horde side, auction houses can be located in the Undercity, Ogrimmar, Thunder Bluff, and Silvermoon City.
Use of the auction house
The first thing to do once you reach an AH is to talk to the auctioneer, just click on the character to start. On the left of the dialog window, you’ll notice that there are categories for the items listed, for example; weaponry and armor. Simply clicking on the category you wish to browse will open a new dialog window where you can browse the items on offer on the auction house.

It’s worth getting familiar with filters as soon as possible, as this can save a ton of time! There are many items available in the AH and if you don’t apply filters and get more specific, you could be browsing there for hours! To apply a filter, simply click on the “All” tab and apply your filters from there.
If you happen to know the name of the item you’re trying to purchase, you can go ahead and mark it in the search filter, then click search and see if they have the item you need right away (make sure you spell the item name correctly!) .
A good tip for fashion fans is that you can see how an item will look on your character before you commit to buying it! This is commonly known as the dressing room, to do this hold CTRL and then click on the item you wish to equip to preview your character.
price check
Before you fully commit to buying any item, make sure you know the price first! If you found the item was good value for money and wanted it right there, you could “buy” it at the asking price. To do this, select the item you wish to purchase and then click the “buy” tab at the bottom of the AH window.
Bid on an item
The auction house is no different than a real world auction house (in theory), if you decide to bid on an item you can expect other players to bid as well. You should definitely start bidding as soon as the auction starts, just in case you can come away clean without competition (highly unlikely, but you never know).
To bid on an item, click on the bid tab located near the “buy” tab. Please note that when you bid on a certain item, the amount of gold you bid will be automatically deducted from your funds. If another player outbids you, the deducted gold will be returned to you by post. Check your mailbox!
Sell on the auction house
Selling items on the auction house is a bit more complex than bidding on items, but it’s still pretty easy once you’ve done it a few times. If you want to earn more gold in WoW, auction houses are a safe bet. To start selling an item in the AH, you will need to select the “Auctions” tab located on the left of the screen and then place the item you wish to sell on the vacant item slot.
You will need to set a starting price and a full purchase price for your item. Make sure you know the monetary value of your items before you put them up for sale at auction. The best way here, if you’re not sure, is to search for the same item in the auction and set your starting and purchase price slightly lower than theirs. Then you’ll want to select the duration of your auction item in 12 hours, 24 hours. hours or 48 hours.
