Cherry Picker – Cold Weather MEWP Machine Maintenance Guide

Cold weather negatively affects almost all materials. The lower the temperature, the more adverse the effect. Specific effects include:

(1) MEWP batteries will not perform well in sub-zero temperatures. Battery-operated machines should be stored and used indoors in these weather conditions, unless the machine is equipped with gel batteries specifically designed for sub-zero temperatures.

(2) Rubber becomes very stiff and brittle under extreme cold conditions and also when exposed to moderately cold temperatures for prolonged periods. Several hours of operation or preheating may be required to soften the rubber.

(3) Wiring, cables, and rubber hoses can become brittle and crack. Handle these items with care to avoid damage.

Before operations

(1) Check that the brakes are not frozen and can be released. The use of portable heating equipment may be necessary.

(2) Check springs for cracks due to brittle metal.

(3) Make sure the tracks/wheels are not frozen to the ground. Park vehicles on wood blocks, planks, or other materials to reduce surface freezing. In addition, it may be necessary to spread sand, earth, salt or a combination of these materials on the surface traveled to help traction.

(4) Make sure cooling systems are protected with the correct antifreeze compound.

(5) If the engine is difficult to start, check the spark plugs for a layer of ice due to condensation. For diesel engines, check that the battery has adequate charge to ensure glow plug operation.

(6) Make sure starter motor drive mechanisms are clean and properly lubricated to prevent freezing.

(7) Check the batteries of the MEWP cherry picking machine to make sure they are fully charged by measuring the specific gravity of the electrolyte.

Tips

It’s best to keep overhead controls covered if left outside to prevent water and snow from freezing on switches and joysticks. Also use the dead man’s switch on diesel machines to isolate the batteries in case water or snow shorts out.
